Ogle Me Some features: Stone Temple Pilots (STP)

STP at Halifax Metro Centre

Scott doing the Crackerman mic thang

Back in November of 2009, I got the chance to see STP in concert at the Metro Centre in Halifax. I know they’re not a Nova Scotia band, but they came to Halfax, and I’m a HUGE STP fan. I even bought Scott Weiland’s biography for my Kindle and read it in a day. Despite some critic panning, I really enjoyed it because it actually sounded authentically written by him, not by a ghost writer.

Anyway. Back to the concert.

I had to sneak in my lil point and shoot. I was in a seat in the first row over to the side (um. NOT the floor. My daughter was on the floor AT THE FRONT with a friend, so Mama had to have seat…besides I’m getting old.)

They played ALL my favs. All of them. Every last one except Atlanta, but I didn’t really expect that anyway, so that’s OK. This pic is from when they played Crackerman. So I’m a sticking up that video for ya too right from the actual concert cause some guy was vidya taping it and I found it on Youtube.

Ryan Cook at concert to promote Music Week 2009

This pic was taken back in the winter of 2008. My hometown was trying to promote the notion of Music Week coming to our area for its annual convention. When they decided to put their celebration in our town, they offered a concert to celebrate and hometown local musician, Ryan Cook played to a full house. Ryan Cook is a small town boy with big town aspirations–and he just might make it. Recently, he was contracted to open for Dwight Yoakem and Travis Tritt. Pretty big news. But then, Ryan’s has pretty big star potential. Plus, he’s just a real nice fella.

I have two favorites: One is his zombie inspired tune: Dead like Me and this one that is just so evocative of our area. Summer in the Valley

Please follow Ryan on twitter or fan him on Facebook and pick up his album or tickets to wherever he is playing. You won’t regret it.

Tim d'Eon from Wintersleep at Nova Scotia Music Week in Yarmouth

Tim d'Eon from Wintersleep at Nova Scotia Music Week in Yarmouth

This week’s Ogle Me Some was decided the moment I saw a commercial on televeision that used Wintersleep background music and a local guy at the end planting a tree. (Vid is below)

This pic is of hometown boy, Tim d’Eon playing at the NS Music Week gala during Nov 2010. I had a seat way in the 11th roy and I’m lucky to have caught something this good as when they explode on stage, these boys in Wintersleep explode on stage.

They are making it big and in just two and half years since getting nominated for, and winning, a Juno, these guys are really rolling. They were on Letterman, if you can believe it. You can follow them on twitter for updates. (@wintersleep)

Nova Scotia has so much talent, and so much

very close to home that it’s amazing. The world is finally taking notice. Local boys like Ryan Cook are opening for Big name country acts like Dwight Yoakem. Post on Ryan next week., I think.

For your listening enjoyment, here is the video for “Weighty Ghost” by Wintersleep folllowed by the commercial that got me excited.

Way to go guys!

Ogle Me Some: a lil #youth #music for you from novascotia @thomason_molly

June 10 and 11th this year marked the third annual convention of Minor Music: a great event that exposes youths in music to…well…more music. It teams up mentors and protegees, offers open jams and clinics, and it’s just an absolute great time.

Can I just say it was a a penultimate fantastic time this year?

My Ogle Me Some this week is Molly Thomason who I snapped from my little seat in the eighth  row. I’m impressed she came out so clear although I had to wait till she was fairly still in the lighting so I wouldn’t blur the heck out of her because my shutter speed was so slow. I think the shot suffers, but the blue light is cool.

I’m pasting in a video from the concert where she’s doing her hit All Down the Highway. Did you realize this little songbird is under 18? Wow. Check out her website for details

June 10 and 11th this year marks the third annual convention of Minor Music: a great event that exposes youths in music to…well…more music. It teams up mentors and protegees, offers open jams and clinics, and it’s just an absolute great time.

My Ogle Me Some this week is Christina Martin who I snapped at Harmony Bazaar a couple of years ago. Her musical partner does some amazing slide guitar and her voice is sweet sweet sweet. Christina will be at Minor Music this year with Molly Thomason ..but that’s not all. Their music will be captured live by well known visual artist Holly Carr in a silkscreen that will be auctioned off at the end of the convention.

If you’re in the area, you should look it up and see what it’s all about.

For now, I offer you a couple of vids: Christina because she’s currently being ‘ogled’ (ewww. sounds dirty; no offense folks), Holly Carr, and my favorite local musician doing something good for my favorite local musical event: Danny MacIsaac

New Ogle Me Some from GonzoInk: @threesheet at NSMW 2010

I bought a new wide angle lens so that I could play during NSMW…a nice new 17mm F2.8, thinking I could get some cool, weirdly distorted wide angle snaps. I could hardly wait.

Bummer. It wasn’t fast enough to catch the energy on the stage for Three Sheet, but I did manage to get some little thing. Check out my Ogle Me Some tab for the pic and links.

Have you been to a live ThreeSheet event? Weren’t they dabomb? Tell me where you saw them, what you thought.

New Ogle Me Some at GonzoInk: Melanie Doane @MelanieDoane #music

If you know me at all you know I love to take photos of live music. It’s sort of a passion. I have a lot to learn since I have zero photography training, but it keeps my muse from spitting in my cornflakes when I’m too busy to write . Again, the pic isn’t pro quality, but it gives you a chance to be exposed to some great musicians you might not have known existed. (OK, so Melanie Doane is a Canadian superstar, but she’s from NS originally). Check out my Ogle Me Some tab for the pic and links.

have you had the wonderful opportunity to see Melanie live? What did you think? Feel free to comment, link below our favorite tune so we can visit and enjoy

Here’s a lil vid I found on Youtube that shows her doing a lot of things…you tell me this chickie ain’t hot.

New Ogle Me Some: Gordie Johnson from @Big_sugar_music

If you follow me on twitter or on facebook, you’ll have noticed my strangely excited interest that Big Sugar followed me on twitter. I need a life, I know. But I enjoy Big Sugar, my husband loves Big Sugar, and Gordie Johnson is just…well besides being an awesome musician…hot. There it is, bald as a newborn mouse.

If you know me at all you know I love to take photos of live music. It’s sort of a passion. So at FredRock 09 I got a chance to snap Gordie Johnson during a brief let up of the rain (It always seems to rain in NB) with my cheapie point and shoot camera that I smuggled in. He didn’t play Wild Ox Moan, but he did play Digging a Hole. Check out my Ogle Me Some tab for the pic and links.

What’s your favorite Big Sugar tune? Feel free to comment, link below so we can visit and enjoy
